Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (Down syndrome and Trisomies)
Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (Down syndrome and Trisomies) screens for screening for trisomies like:
Down syndrome (trisomy 21)
Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18)
Patau syndrome (trisomy 13)
This Non-Invasive Prenatal Test is a novel test that tests if a fetus has down syndrome and other trisomies.
Amniocentesis has traditionally been used to check the health of a fetus however, amniocentesis is an invasive test, carries the risk of a miscarriage, has a 5% false positive rating and can only be done between 10-15 weeks of pregnancy.
Non-Invasive Prenatal tests (NIPT) on the other hand is non-invasive,carries no risk of miscarriage, has only a 0.1% false positive rating and can be performed as early as 10 weeks into pregnancy.
Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (Down syndrome and Trisomies)- is a safe and highly effective way of screening for trisomies like: Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), Patau syndrome (trisomy 13) and Turner syndrome. It identifies chromosomal abnormalities as early as 10 weeks into pregnancy. It is suitable for twin pregnancies and can also be performed in IVF pregnancies. It offers a precise level of accuracy because the results are derived from fetal DNA (The babies DNA) itself.
Why Get Tested
Mothers at age 20 have a 1 in 1400 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome; the risk rises to 1 in 350 at age 35 and 1 in 100 at age 40.
Research suggests that developmental intervention in early infancy can greatly improve the long term life expectancy for children with Down syndrome.
