Food Intolerance (Lactose and Gluten Intolerance)
Food intolerance or food sensitivity/hypersensitivity is when a person has difficulty digesting a particular food. This can lead to symptoms such as intestinal gas (bloating), abdominal/stomach pain or diarrhea which starts after consuming the food.
Lactose intolerance is when a person is unable to fully digest lactose, a sugar in milk and dairy products, leading to reactions such as diarrhea, gas and bloating.
Gluten intolerance is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein in wheat, barley and rye (foods like oats, alcohol even ice cream). Over time, this reaction damages the small intestine lining and prevents absorption of some nutrients, and could lead to Celiac disease.
Why Get Tested
Milk and dairy products are very common in our diet. It can be found in many of our meals such as buttermilk, cheese spreads and cheese foods, evaporated and condensed milk, ice cream, powdered or dried milk.
Therefore, if a person is lactose intolerance they could be eating any of these foods and suffering from stomach pains, indigestion, bloating and could mistake it for food poisoning.
Lactose intolerance is common and affects both males and females.
Gluten is the protein that makes dough elastic and gives bread its chewy texture.
At the rate at which we consume bread and wheat related pastry in general it is important that we test for gluten intolerance.
So as not to be suffering from stomach pain, indigestion bloating and flatulence.
